Should You Agree to Homeschool Your Children?

Are your children unhappy at school? Do you work at home or stay home as a domestic parent? If you answered yes to either of these questions, there might come a time when your child asks you to seriously consider the option of homeschooling. If the concept of homeschooling is beyond your frame of reference, especially if you have never been a teacher or the parent of a home-schooled child, this question can be hard to answer. Here are some ideas on what to consider before answering your child.

Motivation:

One of the most important factors affecting your child’s education is whether he or she is motivated to learn. If you have the time and the inclination to try homeschooling, you might find that working at home without the pressures of school helps your child succeed. An option is to do a trial of homeschooling when school is not in session to see if the child responds to this learning approach.

Materials:

Another issue in your child’s education is providing access to learning resources For example, if you have a public library within driving distance, the financial ability to buy books, and Internet access, you already have most of the tools to get started.

Discipline:

Homeschooling requires you to be the educational guide of your child. Discipline and hard work are also required of homeschooled children because they will often work alone on learning new concepts. How your child will apply discipline to learning at home is a great topic for discussion before you make a decision.

Drawbacks:

For many years now, an influential concept in education continues – children learn best in social settings as they construct knowledge. If you believe that your child learns better in the school environment because of the opportunity to share experiences with other students, then losing the social aspect of schooling is a drawback of homeschooling. There are other drawbacks too, but they will vary in each family.
