Facility

The National Inventors Hall of Fame School... Center for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Learning will occupy a new addition to the existing National Inventors Hall of Fame Foundation (NIHFF) along with renovated space. The NIHFF and the new CLC will be integrated and will share the facility. The facility will feature:

  • Multi-use and well organized spaces conducive to innovative group and individual learning
  • Superior air quality with good acoustics and lighting
  • Space for parent, teacher and community education
  • Accessibility for children, family members, staff and visitors with physical challenges

Listed below is a summary of the CLCs sustainable design features, grouped by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) category.

SUSTAINABLE SITES
  • No disturbance of quality land, building on a pre-developed site
  • Reduction of urban sprawl by producing high density developments
  • Alternate transportation alternatives to conserve fossil fuels (I.e. bike racks, easy access to mass transit, preferred parking for car-poolers and persons that drive low emission/fuel efficient vehicles)
  • Minimizing asphalt and concrete paving by reusing or minimizing new parking
  • Reducing “heat island effects” by placing parking underground and providing a highly reflective roof
  • Reducing light pollution by containing lighting to our site only
WATER EFFICIENCY
  • Reduction of Landscaping irrigation by between 50%-100%
  • Reducing water consumption by providing low flow faucets, toilets, showers, drinking fountains and waterless urinals
ENVIRONMENT AND ATMOSPHERE
  • Optimizing energy use by reductions of at least 14% below typical guidelines
  • Reducing ozone depletion by eliminating use of hydroflorocarbons in heating and cooling equipment
MATERIALS AND RESOURCES
  • Diversion of construction waste from landfills by 50%-75%
  • Use of building materials with high amounts of recycled content
  • Use of local materials to reduce transportation, which reduces consumption of fossil fuels and exhaust emissions
INDOOR ENVIONMENTAL QUALITY
  • Monitoring fresh air intake to the indoors to make sure proper air exchanges occur
  • Eliminate the airborne particles in the HVAC system following construction
  • Low volatile organic compounds to avoid air toxins, i.e., carpet, paint, sealants, varnishes, flooring and wood products without formaldehyde
  • Separate ventilation for chemical/cleaning fluid storage rooms
  • Provide natural light and outside views for 75% - 90% of all occupants
